My skating background
"I started skating in Reston, Virginia, after visiting one of my older
brother Clint’s hockey games. Being the younger sibling of the family I wanted
to do what my brother was doing but was in the phase of trying to separate
myself from him, so the only other clear option at the time was figure skating. I
begin group lessons as something to do while my brother played hockey. As time
went by I continued improving and developed a desire to compete. At the age of 8
I competed in my first competition in freestyle. I began to climb the levels as
a freestyle skater. Then I was introduced to ice dance when my mom and another
mother at the rink decided to have me and her daughter try skating. After a few
weeks of skating together my coach, Scott Myers, decided to have us compete for
fun. So at the age of 10, Ashley Elizabeth Sipe and I we took part in our first
dance competition. After two years, we placed 9th at our first Junior National
Championship.
"After that, the team broke up, and after a series of tryouts I began
skating with Lauren Wlazelek. After skating Lauren for a few months, we began
training in Delaware with Christie Moxley and Sasha Kirsanov on the weekends.
After much thought, my family and I decided it was best for the future of my
skating if I moved to Delaware. Lauren and I went on to win the bronze medal in
juvenile dance at the 2003 Junior National Championships. Unfortunately we were
only able to skate for a year together.
"Up until this point I was also training freestyle and competing, but my love
for ice dance won me over and I focused in on just dance. Again I took part in
various tryouts and began skating with Isabella Cannuscio. We skated for two
years, winning the bronze medal in intermediate dance at the 2004 Junior
National Championships. The next year we moved up to novice and competed at our
first sectional competition and earned a bronze medal. We went on to place
seventh at our first U.S. National Championships. After that, the partnership
came to an end, and once again I was looking for a partner. I began skating with
Alexis Hauser, and we spent a year skating and placed fourth at sectionals. We
then went on to get ninth at the 2006 U.S. National Championships. Alexis
decided to return to her home in Chicago after that.
"After a series of tryouts Sara and I began skating together and so far have had
a very successful year and really enjoy skating together."
What I like most about skating
"My favorite aspect of skating is the ability to be extremely
competitive and athletic while at the same time getting to put on a performance
and entertain. I love to compete and push to be the best, but at the same time I
have the opportunity to express music and perform for people. That very unique
mixture is why I love skating."
Most vivid skating memory
"I would have to say my most vivid skating memory is when I first arrived at
the rink at my first Nationals and looked up and saw the size of the rink and
all the signs and skaters around and realized all my hard work was finally
starting to pay off, and getting on the ice at Nationals was all the sudden a
completely different feeling."
Goals
"My short term goals are to just train as hard as possible everyday and
to get to nationals and skate to the best of my abilities and hope to place
well. My long term goals are to be a National and World Champion representing
the United States, and one day skate in the Olympics."
